The Quantum Mechanics Manatee

Speaks on International Manatee Day

Hello to Dr. Iverson’s Ochem 1 class.  To most of you, today is Labor Day.  I am a manatee, and today is a very special day for me.  Today is international manatee day!  Yay!  I wanted to remind you that Dr. Iverson will not be giving a lecture today because of the holiday, but Chris will be holding his “Missed the Wave” office hour at 1PM.  Click the link on the class calendar to find it.  I also wanted to remind you to watch the second video linked in this same message.  It lets you know exactly what Dr. Iverson wants you to know about sigma bonds and pi bonds.  Remember, for sigma bonds, think overlap of hybrid orbitals or 1s orbitals for H atoms.  For pi bonds confined to two atoms, think of the pi bond as the shape of a hot dog bun, being derived from the overlap of parallel unhybridized 2p orbitals.  In cases with pi bonds that require contributing structures, remember to use molecular orbital theory and think of pi-ways, indicating pi electron delocalization over three atoms, or more atoms in some cases.  Never forget the golden rule of chemistry: Pi electron delocalization over larger numbers of atoms is stabilizing!  What, you did not know that all manatees are quantum mechanics wizards?  It is our super power.  Peace out from here.
